PReSENTATION of INNOFASO

Created in July 2011, InnoFaso SA has been a member of the PlumpyField network since October 2011. Based in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, the company is the first which joined the technology park of 2iE (an international engineering institute where engineers are trained in fields such as water management, energy, environment and civil engineering). Thus, InnoFaso SA benefits from services and takes an active part in the mission of this technology park: further developing innovation in the South while promoting young active engineers. InnoFaso is aimed at making products for the treatment and prevention of malnutrition and at meeting the Burkina Faso needs regarding these products.

Message from the General Manager

Mr. Omar Coulibaly

“In Burkina Faso, malnutrition is a direct cause of or associated with 35% of deaths. The prevalence of global acute malnutrition in children less than 5-year old is estimated to be 10.9% in 2013, which means a considerable decrease compared to the rate communicated by the 2003 demographic and health survey (EDS –Enquête démographique de santé): 21%. Nevertheless, it remains higher than the WHO’s “emergency” threshold: 10% (Unicef source). Considering these alarming figures, we decided to take action for Burkina Faso with InnoFaso. With our Burkinabe food-processing company created in 2011 and based on the science and technology park of the 2iE engineering institute, we intend to be a tool in the plan for food safety of Burkina Faso. The aim of this local production is to offer humanitarian stakeholders a quick access to specific nutritional products meeting international quality standards. We plan to be a lever of development for the agri-food supply chain by adding value to the whole production line from the fields of peanut, which is the main raw material of the Plumpy’Nut® product. Plumpy’Nut® is used for nutritional rehabilitation in case of severe acute malnutrition, which is the most serious stage of malnutrition. So that it can offer its production to the international organizations cooperating with the Burkinabe Ministry of Health for treating severe acute malnutrition in the country, InnoFaso was successfully audited by Medecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in February 2013. This audit is shared with the United Nations agencies, UNICEF and the World Food Program. Thanks to the efforts of UNICEF, the Ministry of Health and their partners, the product arrives at most of the country’s health care centres.”
